iPods® in Sensory studios®

Girl using iPod with Brolley and Projector
Most of the world knows what an iPod® is, (there are over 100 million of them being used), but just in case you don’t; it is a very stylish portable digital audio and video storage and playing device. It enables you to very easily store virtually any audio or visual tracks, files and information and replay it directly through the player (with headphones), or on a television, through a multi-media projector, computer, or on a sound system.

iPods®, iTunes® and podcasting are widely used in Schools, colleges and universities for activities including recording and broadcasting lessons and lectures, sharing information, music and videos. Children produce school podcasts as part of their curriculum work, professional and voluntary organisations create podcasts to broadcast advice and guidelines to the world. And the great thing is, that they are nearly all free of charge.

How can we use them in Sensory studios?
  • For slide shows
Make your own slideshow of anything, a trip to the zoo, what I cooked in the kitchen, all my friends, relatives and pets, a story, a sequenced activity, visual instructions, etc. etc.. (I have a slideshow of textures and colours on my iPod®, just assembled from photos I’ve taken over the years).
  • For story telling
Create libraries of sounds, photos, drawings and videos to play whilst telling your story. The libraries can be very easily changed and added to at any time, and you can share them with anyone in the world.
  • Creating themes and lessons
Take pictures, download from the internet, produce them on your computer, use any images, sounds and videos to create effects for a journey through space, a trip to the shop, London in the second world war, what do I need to make an omelette?, or any other subject. The pupils can help to create the themes and keep them as evidence of their work.

Using iPods and iTunes is very simple and the technology is being improved and becoming even easier all the time.
