The Kube - Wooden Sensory Den - Sensory Den Cube
Create a defined, inviting space for quiet time, imaginative play and sensory activities with the The Kube.
Constructed from robust 15 mm birch plywood, this substantial 100 cm x 100 cm x 100 cm wooden sensory den provides an enclosed-feeling space while retaining large open sides for easy access, visibility and interaction.
Ideal sensory den for schools, SEN settings, sensory rooms, therapy rooms, clinics and early years environments, this den cube can be used as an open sensory retreat or combined with the optional Blackout Curtain Kit to create a darker, more enclosed sensory space.
This den vCube is supplied flat packed for customer self-assembly, making it practical to transport into classrooms and sensory spaces before being assembled in its intended location.
Why Choose The Kube?
-
Generous 1 metre cube design, providing a substantial space for sensory activities, relaxation and play.
-
Constructed from 15 mm birch plywood for a strong, high-quality wooden structure.
-
Large rounded openings provide easy access while helping the interior feel distinct from the surrounding room.
-
Creates a useful dedicated area within a larger classroom, sensory room or therapy environment.
-
Can be personalised with cushions, sensory lighting, tactile resources and other appropriate sensory room equipment.
-
Suitable for open-ended imaginative play as well as quieter sensory activities.
-
Optional Blackout Curtain Kit allows the environment to be made darker and more enclosed when required.
-
Supplied flat packed for self-assembly.
Optional Blackout Curtain Kit
For environments where greater visual separation or reduced ambient light is required, an optional Blackout Curtain Kit is available to purchase separately from this product page.
Once fitted, the curtains cover The Kube's openings to create a more secluded dark sensory den. Users can move through the curtains to enter and leave the space, while staff can open them again whenever greater visibility is preferred.
The blackout kit can make this den cube particularly useful alongside carefully selected sensory lighting and visual resources, helping create a compact sensory environment within a classroom or larger sensory room.
Please note: the Blackout Curtain Kit is not included with The Kube as standard. It must be selected and purchased separately and is customer-fitted.
Sensory and Therapeutic Benefits
A sensory den can provide a clearly defined environment where the amount and type of sensory stimulation can be more deliberately controlled.
-
Supports sensory modulation: The enclosed design can help reduce competing visual distractions and provide a more predictable space for sensory activities, quiet engagement or transitions between tasks.
-
Provides a defined regulation space: Within busy classrooms or therapy environments, this den cube can provide an identifiable place where appropriately selected calming or organising sensory strategies can be offered.
-
Flexible levels of visual input: Use this den cube open for greater visibility and interaction, or add the optional blackout curtains when a darker environment is appropriate.
-
Supports focused sensory activities: The interior can be combined with suitable lights, tactile resources, cushions and other sensory therapeutic resources to create different sensory experiences according to the activity and individual programme.
-
Encourages active exploration and imaginative play: Its simple open-ended design allows the cube to become a den, reading space, play environment or part of therapist-led sensory activities.
-
Useful within occupational therapy programmes: The Kube can form part of a wider sensory environment selected by an occupational therapist according to the person's sensory needs and therapeutic goals.
Where equipment is used as part of Ayres Sensory Integration®, meaningful therapeutic outcomes depend on the overall therapist-delivered intervention, including individual assessment, active participation, appropriate sensory opportunities and carefully graded "just-right" challenges. Equipment alone should not be expected to produce lasting sensory or developmental change.
A Sensory Den for the Classroom
The Kube is particularly well suited to school sensory room ideas and classroom environments where a permanently separate room may not be available.
Positioned within a classroom, SEN area or dedicated sensory room, it creates a recognisable space without requiring structural alterations to the building. Teachers and therapists can adapt the contents according to the activity, whether creating a quiet reading den, sensory exploration area or darker visual environment.
Its neutral birch plywood construction also makes this den cube easy to integrate alongside existing classroom furniture and sensory equipment for schools.
Create Your Own Sensory Space
The Kube provides a versatile starting point for a wide range of sensory den ideas and sensory room ideas. Depending on the setting and the intended activity, the interior could be combined with suitable:
-
Soft floor cushions or padded mats
-
Tactile sensory resources
-
Fibre optic products
-
Low-level sensory lighting
-
Cause-and-effect resources
-
Projected visual effects
-
Comfortable seating or positioning equipment
When creating a reduced-stimulation or calming space, resources should be selected carefully rather than filling the den with unnecessary sensory input.
